EARS of Chicago Hosts Carl Tatz Event at Soundscape Studios

Nashville, TN: TEC Award-nominated studio designer and PhantomFocus™ System (PFS™) creator Carl Tatz, principal of Carl Tatz Design LLC (CTD), recently spoke to an audience of fifty-plus members of the Engineer And Recording Society of Chicago (EARS) at Chicago's Soundscape Studios about the realities of near-field monitoring. Through graphs, illustrations and ultimately a PFS listening session, Tatz was able to open attendees' eyes and ears to little-known frequency anomalies inherent in stand - and console mounted near-field monitors and their solutions through the acclaimed PFS.

"People are still buzzing about the meeting, and lots of questions are flying around. Carl's presentation was truly informative and eye-opening (or rather 'ear-opening'). All around just great," comments EARS co-president, engineer and Joy Ride Recording Studio owner Blaise Barton. Continues EARS co-president Reid Hyams, engineer and principal of X-Art Entertainment, "Carl's presentation was brilliant - well received and most appreciated by everyone!" Carl Tatz states, "It's very gratifying to be able to share this heretofore unavailable knowledge to audio professionals who can take some advantage of it even without the PFS."

Following the lecture, participants had the unique opportunity to audition the Carl Tatz Design PhantomFocus System in Soundscape's Studio A control room and experience the information presented in the lecture. Veteran engineer and Urban Guerrilla Engineers principal Danny Leake (Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Sting) exclaimed, "The PhantomFocus System is extraordinary in its power, accuracy and detail. I had the advantage of hearing Mike's room before Carl's PFS....it was night and day. What sounded, 'soft focused' before was brought in to brilliant clarity. I cannot praise the PhantomFocus System enough."

Engineer and Soundscape Studios owner Michael Kolar sums up his PFS experience: “When you can mix from instinct and taste as opposed to compensating for playback anomalies, the sky is the limit. When it’s right on the PhantomFocus System, it’s right everywhere.”

About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus™ System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.

There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus™ System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.

Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus™ System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.

Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus™ System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus™ System , you can’t go back.
